A trip into the Rwenzori is a life experience and a rewarding one, but it must be well planned.
“And so you need to be well prepared to enjoy this lifetime visit!”
The six-night / seven-day hike reaches an altitude of 14,000ft (4,267m) above sea level. The conditions on the mountain are a challenge to everybody, even to an experienced hiker. It frequently rains in the mountains, and the trails, of course, are un-engineered and steep and slippery. Rain and cold temperatures, bogs, mud, steep terrain, and high altitude are some of the factors that make it a challenging trip. Nevertheless, it is an exciting trip! Since much of the year, rain, mud, mist, and wind are a daily happening, adequate clothing and a mental attitude are required. These conditions are a must. Don’t forget to carry good rain gear, a good sleeping bag, a warm hat, gloves, heavy socks, gum boots, gaiters, and walking sticks for balance and to probe the mud, and a basic first aid kit.
Porters will be carrying your heavy equipment and food, leaving you a small pack with rain gear, warm clothes, and on higher sections,a camera, water bottle, snacks, and lunch. We’ll purchase food from Kasese, and if possible, some in Kampala. RMS (Rwenzori Mountaineering Services) can provide cooking utensils and cooks at a fee.
The high altitude and cold, wet conditions of the Rwenzori Mountains can adversely affect some hikers. Some of the ailments that may occur are: Hypothermia, Dehydration, Altitude sickness, AMS (Acute Mountain sickness), HAPE (High altitude pulmonary edema), and HACE (High altitude cerebral edema).
