Birding Rwanda & Gorillas

10 Days

Day 01 :
Arrive and transfer to Akagera

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your safari guide, who will transfer you to Akagera National Park.

Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge. (FB)

Day 02 :
Bird Lake Ihema

Early morning birding along Lake Ihema, or take a canoe ride on the same lake to see the large number of hippos, the huge Nile crocodile, and birds.

Day 03 :
Safari/Game drive and boat trip

An early game drive in search of the Savanah birds and you will have chances of seeing game such as the biggest antelope, the Loan Antelope and the fastest one, the Topi on the hills overlooking a chain of the lakes neighboring River Kagera, return to Lake Ihema late in the after noon for a boat ride on the to view lots of water birds and if lucky you will see the biggest Nile Crocodile.

Day 04 :
Transfer to Nyungwe Forest

An early start for Nyungwe Forest. On the Way, visit the King’s Palace and the National Museum, one of the richest in Africa in terms of culture; lunch in Butare and proceed to Nyungwe. Go for an evening birding in the nearby forest.

Day 05 :
Bird Kamiranzovu Swamp

An early start for Kamiranzovu Swamp to enjoy the whole morning birding, and return to the lodge during the heat of the day for lunch. In the Evening, go birding at Karamba and return late for dinner.

Day 06 :
More Birding

Go for a walk to the waterfall where you have better chances of seeing one of the Albertine endemics, the Rwenzori Turaco. In the afternoon, go for the colobus monkeys.

Day 07 :
Bird Uwinka

Another Full day birding at Uwinka on Rangiro Road and a Canopy walk in the afternoon.

Day 08 :
Transfer to PNV

Early start for Kinigi. The journey north goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterise much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. Late lunch on arrival at PNV.

Day 09 :
Gorilla Trekking

Go gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans (subject to permit availability at the time of booking). Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest of the Virungas is a magical experience.

If you are lucky, you can get to the gorillas, spend an hour with them, and be back at the base in time for a late lunch! Some gorilla families, however, are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy.

Day 10 :
Departure 

This day, we have an early morning birding before returning to Kigali and transferring back to the Airport for your return flight
